THE COME UP

THE COME UP| 1 O.A.K.

I linked up with singer/songwriter 1 OAK a little while ago and learned some pretty interesting tea. Not only is mister 1 (Of-A-Kind) an amazing artist, he also has a lot of musical talent and behind the scenes history in the game. 1 OAK comes from a family of gospel legends – his god mother & father were Walter & Tramaine Hawkins. This connection + being born & raised in Oakland, California has heavily influenced his sound and has led him to where he is today. From HBK to Stevie Wonder we dissected his sound, and he showed me a lot of his musical inspirations while strumming through Rasputin’s archives.

So 1 O.A.K. stands for Oakland? I notice alot of bay pride in rappers out here, how did you become linked with HBK and Trakademics?

1 OAK stands for one of a kind, but yes I am from Oakland so its that too. I actually have a story about that, so I used to work for Youth Radio and damn near all the people known in the bay went to Youth Radio, I was working there as a radio producer, shaping radio stories and stuff and that circles back to HBK, Su used to be one of my students, and I actually taught him how to make beats.

Trackademicks?

Im apart of HNRL just a group of producers and rappers making music, its about 7 of us. And Trackademicks he be on his shit, he was featured on Fool’s Gold.

It seems like your really serious about putting art into your music, when did you decide you wanted to become a singer?

When I was around 17/18 I was just you know making beats, I was a turphy little kid. Then 2007/2008 I started singing.

How would you describe your sound to someone who hasnt heard of you before?

I would say my sound is rooted in soul and funk.. I love all types of shit, Im really influenced by these records, one of my favorite past times is to come down here and go through the $1 record bins, I used to teach the kids how to sample beats this way. I did jazz in high school, I was raised in the church, and my God parents were gospel singers so its just a lot of different stuff that influenced my sound.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Stevie Wonder! I get to see him this weekend and i’m so juiced, I just got a Stevie tat too so its real lol. My God father Walter Hawkins he died a few years back but he’s a big influence because before I heard any rap music it was all gospel music, I started out playing drums, then singing, so he was kind of a big deal him & his brother wrote the song Oh Happy Day.

I see that a lot of bay artists have been collaborating lately, whether it be for shows, songs, etc. who do u think are the next big names to look for coming out of the town?

Theres definitely alot. Dave Steezy, David Michael, something about them Davids.. my little one, Tia Nomore watch out for her. The bay is coming out with a lot of talent right now

Slide Thru is still an anthem right now, do you have any Upcoming projects?

Yeah so Champagne Room is out already, that was a collaborative piece but the new album is coming out sometime next year. Im producing most of it, and Traks has a couple on there as well.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check his music out and let us know what you think.
