Born and raised in San Francisco, Red Corvette is a DJ, blogger, and visionary behind Cupcake’s and Champagne. I was given the opportunity to meet with her before Wednesday’s ‘Cupcake’s and Champagne’ and got to know what makes this vibrant energy tick.

How did you come up with the name ‘Red Corvette’?

Red corvette came from a Curren$y song called ‘She Don’t Want A Man’ I used to always listen to it and in the first verse he’s like “She was a little red corvette” so I started with Little Red Corvette but then a friend was helping me find a dj name and she said just drop the little.

When did you start DJing?

Started DJing in 2012 in my apartment in Los Angeles.

When did DJing become your full time job?

September of 2014. I started being booked between LA, Pomona and Oakland. I started hating my job, there was no real room for growth and I kept ending up in a whole bunch of dead end jobs. It got to the point where I was just doing shit to get fired, showing up late, not giving a fuck and one day they fired my ass, I maxed out my unemployment and now I’m throwing parties and doing what I want to do.

What are you most influenced by?

I am influenced by music. I always loved music. I always had to get the new cd’s. I started of listening to 90’s R&B. My first CD was TLC’s ‘Crazy, Sexy, Cool’ and then my friend down the block played a whole bunch of Trina, and I got introduced to her, Cash Money, No Limit, 36 Mafia, Talib, Mos Def. As I got older I started listening to dance hall, reggae, EDM is slowly creeping into my library. Music has always influenced me and I always thought DJ’s were tight.

When you were younger, what did you think you were going to be when you grew up?

When I was younger I wanted to be a basketball player but then I started smoking weed (laughs), started getting interested in boys, I still love the game I just don’t play it.

Gimme 3 of your favorite Bay Area artists.

I really love 2010 IAMSU, I used to play his mixtape all the time. Number two, I always listen to Mac Dre. Geanie in the Lamp is one of my favorite cd’s and then the real ratchet DLO, I’m like a ratchet at heart.

If you were stranded on an island and could only listen to 3 artist who would they be?

TLC, old school Ca$h Money, back when Wayne was the weakest in the clique, when he had neck braids, and Goldlink, he’s a DC artist. I got some cool, things to vibe with, and shit to get ratchet to.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Touring as a DJ, going to big music festivals, do about five of them a year. I also want to open a sneaker shop for females with a nail shop inside of it. I want it to be in the Bay. People always feel like they have to move away, open up there stores elsewhere and then come back. I want to open it either in San Francisco, or Oakland, maybe Berkeley, small quaint spot.

What are 4 words you’d use to describe yourself?

Laid Back

Ratchet – Cause I’m calm and I’m cool, but I still like to be a little ratchet.

What is Champagne and Cupcakes?

Champagne and Cupcakes happends every 4th Wednesday. January was my first one, ‘Run The World Clothing’ came out, last month had her jewelry boutique here – Juans Box. Next month, April 22nd I will have 2 nail artists doing nails and I may have a live artist as well.

When I first starting DJing I couldn’t find any gigs that I wanted to work, so I decided to create my own gig. And I want to make sure that the DJs are females.

What is one thing you want people to take away from this interview?

I wanna make sure people know to look out for me. I haven’t accomplished as much as I wanted to but I’m not gonna stop. I’m coming to take over.

Make sure to check out some of Red’s sound cloud playlist, check out her site, and follow her oninstagram and twitter.
