PRIDE & RESPECT. IS. MY. EVERYTHING

I was walking around downtown Oakland when I peeped some fresh windbreakers outside a shop. I wandered inside the store and from the moment I walked in, it was all love. It’s like a chill kick it spot. Owners Devonte Pitre and Jonathan Murphy open the doors to Prime in 2012. The dope duo bring more to the table than just fresh fits. They are all about giving back to community, providing a space for individuals to express themselves, and inspiring others to find their inner hustler. Johnathon and Devonte business started by throwing parties. Once they found success in the party scene and saw that people were rocking with their movement, they decided to try their luck in the clothing business. They made some connections, made some calls, taught themselves graphic design, and after a lot of hard work and grinding, Prime Development was born.
“We’ve always known how to make things happen.” – Johnathon
WHAT MOTIVATED BOTH OF YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Just being able to support yourself without being subordinate. Before Prime, I played Football for South Eastern Louisiana State. I love football but being a student athlete was becoming more of a job than my passion. I began to see the politics behind playing football and I didn’t like it.
SO WHAT IS BOTH OF YOUR VISION WITH PRIME? WHAT ARE YALL INTENTIONS?
Mainly to impact the community in the best way we can. Oakland has talent but we don’t have the platform to showcase that talent. Some of the most talented people come out of the Bay Area and I want to give them a place to show the world why.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE BAY?
Probably the diversity. You can meet people from all around the world without going anywhere. The Bay Area is also a place where people are always on the grind. It’s less talk and more action.
Much respect to everyone at Prime and thank you for allowing me into your space. Come check them out for yourselves at 349 15th street Oakland, CA
