Freespirit Fest 3 was a MOVIE, and if you missed it I feel bad for you! Well, The Nook and Kranny Squad was definitely in the building and got to experience Elujay live. His set was super LIT. He had a live band and his energy was on 10 the entire time. So, in collaboration with the Instagram DM Gods, we caught up with the Oakland MC and are starting your week off right with the interview.
What is your name and where are you from?
Elujay, and I’m from Oakland California.
When did you start making music?
Started making music like 4-5 years ago.
When did you fall in love with music?
When I got The College Dropout album as a birthday gift in 2005.
What made you realize that music is something you wanted to do?
After my friend installed fruity loops on my computer and showed me how to use the program.
What has been your biggest musical highlight this year?
Freespirit Fest was cool but probably Tombogo Boundless Heights 2 event I played at the Oakland Terminal.
I caught your performance at Freespirit Fest 3, and you had a band, which is super dope. Have you always performed with live music?
Yes I’ve been performing with a band for like 2 years now.
If you weren’t doing music, what would you be doing?
I get asked this question a lot and I’d Probably be doing Graphic design or some videography type stuff.
Who are your musical influences?
My biggest musical influences are Musiq Soulchild, Outkast, Common , Erykah Badu, Pharell, and Ledisi.
How would you describe your sound?
Honest soulful raps
How do you get into your creative space?
I have to be very tapped into the vibes I’m working on or else it will sound forced.

What is one big misconception that people have of Oakland?
That we all have seen someone get shot which is true for some of my friends but violence and negativity is usually brought upon and individual involved in that lifestyle out here.

Playing big crazy ass festivals , touring , doing some cool drugs and owning a big business and having an apt or home with my girlfriend.

Doing what you love while being happy. If your not happy your not successful. Life is more about self fulfilling then making others happy
