Looking to grow and continue to transform into better version of yourself? It is important to stop. and do some reflecting. As lyricist Lauryn Hill once said, “How you gonna win when you ain’t right within?” You must fix what is on the inside to evolve into the person that you want to be, and a key component of that is self-reflection.
So, what is self-reflection? Self-reflection is the me time that you set aside to ask yourself questions that are focused on your goals, your state of mind, any L’s or wins that you have faced. It’s a moment you take to learn from any mistakes and situations, and figure out what you can take from them to help you grow.
We all make mistakes. Instead of dwelling on them, why not learn from them? Self-reflecting on past mistakes or issues will allow you to move forward and let go in a positive way. The past clearly dictates your future, and taking a moment to yourself to debrief will bless you with the opportunity of leaving behind any unwanted baggage.

- Find a Place
Find a place for you to self-reflect. Whether it’s in your room, at the park, on the roof, find a place that works for you.
- Silence Everything
Your phone, the fact that bae still hasn’t text you back, anything that could distract you from the task at hand.
- Start Reflecting
If this is your first time, you might be confused on where to start. Grab a pen, a notebook, and reflect on the last few weeks or months by asking yourself some questions. Here are some to get you started:
What have I been spending too much time thinking about lately?
What thoughts are going unchecked?
Am I carrying any guilt or shame with me?
How can I change those things?
How can I love myself more today?
What drives me?
What’s the top priority in my life right now? Is that the way I want it to be?
Am I settling for less than what I am worth? Why?
What am I going to do differently after this time of reflection?
Remember, there is no right or wrong way to self-reflect and I promise you, it will get easier with time. Eventually, you will start seeing a positive change within yourself, and your ability to no longer allow negativity to anchor you to the past will blossom.
