Mamou and I have produced several #Baybased takeovers now and I think we can both say that Shayla’s is one that is really special for us. With all the crazy things going on in the world we live in, organizations like SOOAKLAND give me hope.
All the madness that is going on right now, is both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because it is causing a lot people to WAKE UP. A lot of us were living in denial and believed that discrimination and racial injustices were a thing of the past. Because of that state of denial, POC became complacent (in my opinion with the way that things were.
That is why Shayla is so special. Despite all of the negativity we are surrounded by, she still fights to create positive spaces for the people in her community. Instead complaining about our injustices, she is doing something about it.
So when we confirmed Shayla for the takeover, I knew that the theme of the shoot had to be a tribute to the Black Panther Party. It’s incredible to think that this profound organization was formed 50 years ago right here in OAKLAND. I think this shift in reality, is producing leaders like shayla to do the power work that the Panthers did all those years ago.
