Fresh fruit is something that should be a part of everyone’s daily diet. After a conversation with CHEF AFIBA, I discovered that watermelon is a fruit/veggie I have definitely slept on. Watermelon, is another one of mother nature’s superfruits! Let me give you a couple of reasons why.
WATERMELON HELPS WITH SORE MUSCLES
This one is for all my gym rats out there. Working out and actually pushing yourself to the limit gives you one of the best highs you can experience….until you wake up the next day super sore 😦 Watermelon is rich in citruline, an amino acid that helps with blood circulation. So make sure to take some watermelon with you to your next workout.
HELPS WITH HYPERTENSION & OVERALL HEART HEALTH
Heart conditions are something that should not be taken lightly, especially in the African-American community. 44% of African-American men and 48% of our women suffer from some type of heart condition. In my opinion, diet and stress plays a big part of that problem. There has been studies proving that watermelon is great for your heart. Learn more here.
IT’S SUPER HYDRATING!
The name WATERmelon kind of gives away the fact that this fruit is mostly water. 91% to be exact! But I added this fun fact to encourage those of you who don’t really like to drink water to eat loads of watermelon. It is really important to stay hydrated for your overall health especially during the summer. Water = LIFE!
Now that you have the benefits, here are a couple of ways you can integrate watermelon into your diet.
Hint Water Inc. Was founded by Kara Goldin. She started Hint Water in her kitchen with the intentions of providing a drink that could help with the obesity problem in this country. We have only had the watermelon flavor before, but it is super yummy. The best part about Hint Water is that is was founded in San Francisco! MAKE YOUR OWN WATERMELON DRINKS!
GRAPEFRUIT + WATERMELON AGUA FRESCA // Makes one generous liter
- 4 California Star Ruby Grapefruits, peeled
- 1 small watermelon, cubed and peeled
- 1 lime, cut in quarters
- crushed ice
- sparkling water, optional
- tequila and triple sec, optional
In a juicer, juice the peeled grapefruit, watermelon and lime. Stir together to mix. Add more lime to taste.
As an agua fresca, enjoy cold over ice. I add a splash of sparkling water. It also makes an excellent margarita with a bit of triple sec and a shot of tequila.
