It’s a New Year and for many, a fresh start when it comes to love, motivation, and fitness! Unfortunately, many of us will workout on a daily basis for like a month and get so sidetracked with our busy schedules that becoming fit will no longer be a priority. I say this because this happens to me EVERY YEAR since I have stopped playing sports in high school. It’s quite sad actually. When I was all about the fitness life all those years ago, I found that having a personal trainer (for me at least) was the key success. In the East Bay, we are so lucky to have POC fitness gurus to uplift us in our fitness journey. So, let me introduce you to one my favorites, Mr. Gary Whitaker of Plant B. Fitness. I had a chance to chat it up with Gary and talk about his fitness journey, his business and veganism hope yall enjoy.
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I get satisfaction out of seeing people make transformation. I am a father of one beautiful bright son. My goal while I am on this planet is to impact as many lives as possible and to leave a positive legacy that my son and family can be proud of.
Where are you from?
Born and raised in Oakland Ca
What inspired you to create Plant B Fitness?
Plant based fitness was my outlet to be able to help my friends and family. I felt that there was a need for a plant based approach to fitness.
How long have you been a personal trainer?
I have been training for 2yrs
What inspired you to become a trainer?
Having my own fitness journey of weight loss and weight gain inspired me to create a way to share my knowledge.
How long have you been a vegan and what inspired this diet change?
Going on 6 years
My 1st change happened when I watched food inc then the light bulb went off. I also started looking at people that were living beyond 100yrs old I wanted to know what they ate so I couldn’t copy it since that was one of my many goals. The last movie that really set it off was “earthlings” I was vegan already when I watched this and I had to stop the movie and re watch it the next day.
What are some big misconceptions about being a vegan?
You already know what number 1 is protein.
Then number 2 is that vegans are little and weak.
Favorite dish to make?
Big giant salads have to be my favorite because they just have so many flavors and there is never a bad time for a salad even in the morning
Where do you go for recipe inspiration?
I read a lot of books. Since I got certified with my sports nutrition certification through the Matthew Kenny Culinary Institute I have been using the thrive energy cookbook
By Brendan brazier.
But before that www.vegweb.com is also a good one
Sometimes I just freestyle from my brain I am really good at that.
A lot of people say that they cannot afford to eat healthy everyday. What do you have to say about that? What suggestions do you have to eating healthy on a budget?
I say always put your money where your health is. So no matter what you are going to have to pay either on the front end or the back end the choice is yours.
The front end is proactive: not putting a price on good health because it is priceless
The back end is reactive: hospital, medication etc
The best solution for shopping on a budget is to get to know the farmers at your local farmers market. I go to the jack London farmers market every Sunday and they know me. Cutting out the middle man keeps the cost low
Why do you think it is so important for people to live a healthy lifestyle?
“We live in a very unique time where people are so far removed from themselves that everyone and everything comes before their health. When you live a healthy lifestyle it effects your life on multiple levels socially, career, and your overall outlook on life. Most people never get s chance to see what there body is actually capable of.”
Describe your morning routine for us?
Do my affirmations
Drink 12oz of lemon water
Make a smoothie
Favorite workout routine?
I couldn’t just pick one but I can say that I am working on my special skills to be able to do a strict muscle up. I like body weight training a lot
One thing you cannot leave the house without?
Water is the one thing I cannot leave my house with.
Any advice you want to give to people that are starting their journey towards better health?
1.drinking more water. That is by far the easiest thing that anyone can do.
2.find some: friends or family partner that lives the lifestyle that what you want to live . This is so important because you are the sum of the 5 people that you associate yourself with.
3. Seek out professional help. Even as a trainer when something is beyond me I am not afraid to gather new skills. So on your exercise journey of those women’s health workouts have not been working you might need a little more help creating a plan of action.
